World War II was still in its' early stages, but Germany was advancing quickly. Hitler had used his idea of Blitzkrieg with shocking effect. Germany had taken out Poland by September 29th 1939, Denmark by April 9th, (the same day as the attack), and Norway by June 9th, 1940. Germany then turned to France and the neutral countries between France and Germany. Luxembourg was occupied on May 10th, the Netherlands surrenders on May 14th, and Belgium surrenders on May 28th, 1940. On June 22, 1940, France gives the northern half of France to Germany to be occupied as well as the Atlantic coastline of France.
Then on July 10th, Germany began bombing England, which began the Battle of Britain.
